No city in Canada has Houston's cost of living, consumer goods and groceries cost more in Canada, and so does real estate in all of its cities, unless you go to some small towns that are far from any job centres. Houston cannot really be compared to anywhere in Canada, Houston is a sprawling mess with no zoning, no state income tax (property taxes make up for it), and Texas is a very racist state with a redneck mentality of throwing people in jail or executing them even if they might be innocent. You'll get a lot more for your money in Canada, even if it does end up costing you more to live.
Racism is everywhere in the USA but this depends on where you live in Texas.
It's not just Texas, but 37 states have the death penalty. On the way to Sonoma along the 101, the tour guide mentioned that San Quentin is up ahead. I mentioned that it's very weird for California to have the death penalty since it's considered a "progressive" state. (I remembered the Governator's refusal with Stanley Williams.)
Calgary seems to be a spitting image of Houston with the lack of suburbs and the unprecedented sprawl compared to the rest of Canada. Most people in Calgary don't drive 50 km to work (especially petrol at >$1/L) like in Houston but in the future that very well may be true.
I would say Calgary would be the cheapest major city in Canada due to the lack of PST. Edmonton might be cheaper for that same reason and due to less popularity.
37 states have the death penalty but very few use it all that much. Texas and Virginia are the two biggest executioners. Followed by places like Florida, Oklahoma, Missouri, and a bunch of other southern states. Ohio also executes quite a few.
Calgary has expensive housing, I doubt the lack of PST makes up for the higher cost of housing. You still have to pay GST after all. I am almost certain living in Halifax, most places in the Maritimes really, would be cheaper because housing is dirt cheap over there. Then again, Calgary is a bigger city with more jobs and higher salaries, so your actual wealth/cost-of-living ratio may be preferable there. It really depends what industry you are in.

Everybody has their idea of comfortable living, but I personally think that a single person can live comfortably without roommates at 60,000. At 75,000 you should be able to own a car and do something fun (like ski or golf) on a weekly basis and still have money to save.
