The Canadian prime minister and his wife have been married for 18 years and share three children.
He said that they had decided to separate “after many meaningful and difficult conversations.”
The prime minister’s office said that the couple “are focused on raising their kids in a safe, loving and collaborative environment.” It added that they “will be a constant presence in their children’s lives” and that the family planned to vacation together next week.

An official familiar with the matter said Trudeau will continue to live at Rideau Cottage in Ottawa, where he has lived since 2015, and the children will primarily live there to maintain stability.
The official said she has moved to a separate Ottawa home, but will spend time at Rideau Cottage at times including when he is travelling.
The separation may have been partially driven by an ultimatum from Sophie that Trudeau not contest the next election, but it seems that he is more likely to stick in the political arena.

I thought that Sophie Grégoire Trudeau accompanied her husband to many political events, just not lately. I saw him always wearing wedding ring.
Trudeau, when he became prime minister in late 2015 and the sharply-dressed, handsome couple quickly captured the attention of the world media. Lots of their photographs were published and on the net. I remember the gloving profile of the two in Vogue magazine.
They were often seen together at social functions and on foreign trips. They went to India together. They went to King Charles coronation together...

The Babylon Bee is a satire site. Although it did make some points, one of which about he escaped from any approbation from his Black Face portrayals.
I think Sophie’s been keeping a low profile for a long time.
