My new assistant (I got a good one this time!!!) brought me a printout, I think from here:

Foods To Eat During Chemo | LIVESTRONG.COM

which recommends:
  1. 10-20 grams of glutamine in a bottle of water, during chemo to prevent mouth sores and nerve damage;
  2. (2) 500 mg capsules of ginger root 15 minutes beforehand;
  3. Check vitamin D levels;
  4. Cucumin as an antiinflamatory
Is this a good idea? And will any of these interfere with the Phenergan, Compasine suppositories, Medrol dose pack and Zofran called in by the oncology nurse.

I just don't want to not do something that I should do; the culture here is so conservative. My surgeon is great, but he's religious. This is different than my own core beliefs...

Livestrong has some great stuff. Consult your doctor but the article is right. That is the same thing my doctor and nurses told me during treatment.

Yeah, I emailed the oncology nurse, with basically the same inquiry.

You need to talk to your doctor and get an appointment with an onco-nutritionist. Nurses are great, but that's not their training. Often, it's not even the training of a doctor. There were supplements that sites like Livestrong suggested to take that actually had negative effects on the effectiveness of chemo. Turmeric (cucumin - you'll see it in stores labeled more as turmeric) was the only one that my onc approved (and I couldn't take it for the 3 days before and 3 days after chemo - I was only continued to be allowed to use it because it's the only thing that works for a skin condition I have).

A lot of the supplements touted as having cancer-preventing properties are actually really bad for cancer patients. Antioxidants and fish oil are the two big ones that I remember. You are supposed to focus on getting your nutrients from your food and environment - so fish and foods high in antioxidants are fine because they react differently in your body than the supplements do. My doctor told me that rather than take Vitamin D, I needed to go walk outside for 30 minutes a day. I was not always good at that (what with a 40 hour work week and 2 hours a day in the car), but I think that's a point well taken.

You need my favorite herbal database: Turmeric | Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center
This is run by Sloan-Kettering cancer hospital and has all the latest studies on what herbs do for your body, bad and good, and it lists ways that the herbs might interact with your cancer drugs. Here is a small sample, from the curcumin page:

Quote:
Doxorubicin: Turmeric inhibits doxorubicin-induced apoptosis of breast cancer cell lines in vitro (28).
Cyclophosphamide: Dietary turmeric inhibits cyclophosphamide-induced tumor regression in animal studies (28).
Norfloxacin: Pretreatment with curcumin resulted in increased plasma elimination half-life, thereby reducing the dosage of norfloxacin (56).
Amphotericin B: Curcumin may enhance the effect and decrease the toxicity of amphotericin B (57).
It also lists all the studies that have been done on the herbs, esp as relates to cancer but for other conditions as well. I love this site and I don't even have cancer.

This is an AMAZING resource! Thank you! I wish I had known about it while I was sick - I was scouring PubMed for info instead (which was certainly a good mental exercise for this social sciences major!).
