I've got a MotoG 2nd generation with 8GB of onboard storage, and an SD card set for media storage.

I have almost no apps on the phone, because I can't fit anything other than the OS and a pittance of basic apps.

When I check my Storage and USB I see:

7.29GB usd of 8.00GB

Android: 3.46GB (Jseus, really? Fine, whatever.)
Internal Storage: 3.83GB of 4.54GB

Okay, so far so good. 3.46 + 3.83 = 7.29 yes.

Lets look at internal storage. How do I have 3.46GB of apps...

Apps: 2.17GB
Cached data: 171MB

Uh...

2.17 + 0.171 D.N.E. 3.46 dude.
It should be 2.3GB, not 3.46GB.

So where is that missing gig??! I could install all the apps I needed on that gig. Where is it?!?

Also, when I go into my apps, here are the top 10:
336 MB
162
151
130
124
95
81
79
71
69
56
47
46
44
43
43
35
34
34
34
31
etc. ect.

Add them up, and they actually only total < 2GB, not 2.3, and certainly not 3.46!

WTF? Where is my storage going?

Anyone know of a way to defend your storage on a phone without much internal storage?

The culprit is junk files. It's much like a PC. There are many apps for this. The key is to get one that doesn't become a PITA with constant notifications. ES File Explorer is one. Just turn off all of the automatic settings and manually run it when you need it. Just search on the play store.

and depending on OS.. Sdcards can be use for application holders as well. But if you got those budget phones with 5.x/6.x they might have turn that off. 8gig phones needs to go away honestly.. not worth it all.

How many photos do you have? There are so called JUNK FILES but that doesn't take up GIGS.

Simple fix would be to boot into your recovery, google how to do that on your phone then performing clearing just the cache partition and reboot.

^^^^ this AND see if you can delete some apps you don't ever use.
Check if there is anything running in the background. No fancy screensavers or notifications. No animated stuff.
In some instances, if possible, consider using a desktop version of an app and just bookmark the link to it.
Download your pictures to your computer HD, or any web storage. Clean your space with CCleaner or CleanMaster, do it weekly.
See if that helps. Report back

I think that "missing" storage it's reserved space for future updates.

Thanks for all the suggestions! Repped you all.

I'm wiping my cache. I have almost no apps installed and I was keeping photos on SD card with cloud backup.

If this doesn't help, I'll try the suggested "space defender" app.

I was using my SD card for apps, but I had way more need for media storage than apps (Stupid Android for not letting me do both with the SD card!)

Didn't help.
Now I'm using 3.74 of 4.54
1.99 (apps) + .202 (photos) = 3.74 in android math, apparently.

I'm afraid elnina is right, and stupid android is reserving itself ANOTHER gig on top of the obscene 3.64 this bloatware already requires. I'll try ES File Explorer next.
