Hello friends,

I am a married, mid-twenties female who will be moving to Charleston to pursue my PhD at MUSC this summer. I am less than familiar with the area and have found a potential home within the Meridian Place condos on JI. Is this a realistic/fair commute to the school? Or will 6 miles takes me 30 minutes to drive? I intend to ride my bike as much as possible, is the peninsula mostly flat/sea level?

Similarly, if anyone knows or has available 2 br/2 ba rentals, or even just a private bedroom sublease, I am actively exploring options for affordable living because my husband's job does not allow him to relocate.

Thank you in advance, for sharing your expertise. I look forward to becoming a resident of the area!

It's probably 15 minutes with no traffic. Traffic can back up and it could take 30 min at the worst of times. What is your budget for a 2 bdrm or sharing a house?

Craigslist might have some offerings coming up and maybe even a summer sublease from a college student. Are you here just for the summer?

Meridian is a decent place but you can probably find something a little closer on James Island. If you don't have to cross Folly Rd in rush hr traffic it will make your commute less aggravating.

It's pretty flat around here so bicycling is easy in that regard. Motorist can be clueless and there aren't many bike friendly roads though.

It's an easy commute from there in Meridian Place. Many Musc students live there. I rent the townhome I own there to an Musc employee. There is even a bus that meets at the Walmart right across the way to bring people to Musc each morning. My neighbor years ago also got his PhD and lived in Meridian Place. You can get a 2 bed/2 bath for anywhere from $1000.00 - $1200 there and its a nice place with a bicycle path/walking path around the whole place and you can walk to Wal Mart and other restaurant/bars such as the Kicken Chicken.

I live close to Meridian place. That is an easy commute..I commute to North Charleston and it's about 30-35 min door to door at worst for me. JI is not particularly bike friendly but there does happen to be a path along Meridian Place.
