I think more people confuse Charleston WV with Charles Town WV.
That is people in Maryland and parts of Northern Virginia and Pennsylvania. But if you're in like say Colorado and you say Charleston, people will think South Carolina. There's also a Charlestowne, Massachusetts near Boston where "The Town" with Ben Affleck takes place. I only know about that place because of the movie.
There ARE some people who know Charleston WV because they had to memorize the state capitols when they were in school, and for some reason they might remember more than all the history they were taught about Charleston SC including the events of Fort Sumter and the city's importance in the colonial days.
Charleston SC is also a major tourist destination while Charleston WV is not. I do wish more people would visit here but while West Virginia has a lot of tourism potential I don't think that includes the Metro Valley.
Well, they are sister cities by fire, both were burned during the Civil War, Charleston, SC in Dec. 1861, and Charleston, WV, in Sept. 1862. In Charleston, WV, in their retreat before Gen. Loring, CSA, the Federals set fire to the commissary warehouse, which also destroyed the Bank of Virginia, the Kanawha House, Whittaker's store & warehouse, the Southern Methodist Church and Academy and many other buildings in the center of town.
