How about letting the workers at VW get together and see what they really want. These are real people with their own ideas of what they would like to do and if their future should be at VW or not, right? Maybe they could start their own union and get more done for themselves without worrying about the other union's plans/aspirations? Could have more control over how much and where their dues go as well... Kinda be dumb getting a $2 raise for $1.75 in dues and lose control of your own destiny in the process. Unions do stupid things that workers don't want as well. Betcha (over time) they have a couple meetings between the workers and management about what is or isn't working and discuss some ideas to improve. If the turnover is really ridiculous, that meeting will get here sooner rather than later... The union way is not the only way there is to get it done. Give it time!

Large organizations are run by people. Corruption is going to happen. If corruption is a reason to abolish a type of entity, there would be no companies/corporations.

No one said to abolish them. They don't need to be at VW if they can't behave themselves either! Misrepresenting their intentions (and getting caught doing it) does not help them get in the door at all. I think it will be a long time before the workers will be talking to unions again.

Just across the street from VW, Amazon is hiring. At the same time, many are leaving because of the pressure and the speed. Amazon wants 1st string players at benchwarmer wages.

Typical it seems anymore. I dont understand how high turnover benefits companies. Are employees really that disposable where its better to retrain new people over and over instead of focusing on current workers?

At some point, high turnover should be looked at as a management/training deficiency. Hopefully it will balance/correct itself out before they run out of workers for the positions... They must have some successful system they have based their expectations on... might have to rethink that model soon! How many workers are at VW and what percentages of turnover can anybody estimate from observations? Does anybody know what the industry standard is for turnover for a non-union (or even a union) shop?

That could be true for some of the turnover. Could be true that some of the people they hired, didn't have good work ethics.

Actually, it's not the unions or VW that put the brakes on the organizing of that particular plant. Some corporate sponsored outfit disguising itself as an organization that protects workers rights not to unionize filed some lawsuits that held things up. The frivolous allegations they had leveled against the UAW have been dismissed. And, whether you like unions or not, you should be thankful. Personally, I have seen the indifference employees have at places like Wal-Mart and the poor customer service that follows. And that comes with the territory when you pay low wages. I don't want anyone in that situation building something that I rely on so much and where the price for a worker's mistake could cost me my life, or that of a passenger in my car. But when you pay peanuts you get monkeys. Bringing those wages up to union scale makes those jobs worth holding onto. And in return you get a better product. It also means those individuals have more disposable income which is, of course, a positive for the local economy.

As far as turnover, yeah, it's not a good thing in any place. But constantly having a different employee that's not an expert on doing a particular job building something like a car or an airplane is even scarier. And their mistake could potentially effect thousands of consumers before the problem even gets noticed. Something to think about when you're loading your kids into the car.
