The earthquake was widely felt throughout east TN, northern GA, parts of middle TN, western NC and SC, and northern AL. I live in Farragut and the shaking jolted me wide awake in my bed at 4:15 EST (I am a light sleeper in general) and I could tell right away that it was an earthquake. We are in an active seismic zone but earthquakes of this magnitude are rare - the previous one being a 4.7 earthquake centered near Maryville back in '73.

Thanks I was not aware of an active zone. This level of activity and magnitude would not scare me away

DH works with someone who lives in the vicinity of Exit 97 (I-24) Beechgrove Exit in Bedford County. Their dogs woke them up when the grumbling started, allowing them to feel a few seconds worth.

We are about 25 miles south of them. I was wide awake at 4:00 AM to let one dog out on his regular wake-me-up schedule and didn't feel a thing

I went thru two 4-point-something quakes when I lived in SoCal. One was a roller, one was a shaker. The shaker damaged the water lines at their joints, going to the barn, but that was the worst of it.

My wife's 75_lb dog usually jumps on and off the bed a few times a night, sometimes pausing to scratch herself. Plus my wife usually gets up at least once a night.

I've learned to sleep through a shaking bed or risk losing my sanity and/or job. A 6.0 could be centered under my house and I probably wouldn't notice it.
