My brother and nephew visited two years ago and had a great time. Price wise seems very reasonable - I like a walkable city. I work from home so can relocate, but I like a high-rise in a downtown area. 1 BR or studio OK. Any suggestions of names of places? Thanks in advance.

I've lived in the Atlanta area most of my life and have lived in the Chattanooga area for the past 2.5 years. Here are some insights to both:

Chattanooga:
1) It is pedestrian friendly for the most part, especially in the North Shore and downtown close to the river.
2) There are a lot of walking areas and condos that are not far from Greenlife (now Whole Foods). The North Shore is definitely very walkable.
3) There are some eateries, but not as many choices in Atlanta.
4) I would recommend having a car here in case you want to venture outside of the walkable areas.
5) If you like the outdoors then this is the place for you. Many hiking, biking, climbing areas here and at your fingertips.

Atlanta:
1) Certain areas (Atlantic Station, Little Five Points, parts of Mid-Town) are pedestrian friendly and walkable.
2) You have more options as far as grocery store, eateries, and other everyday items.
3) Atlanta has MARTA, which is the transient for the metro (from the airport all the way to norcross). It's not the METRO in DC, but still fairly reliable.
4) More events going on in Atlanta, but Chattanooga still has quite a bit going on.

I think Chattanooga is more pedestrian and bike friendly than Atlanta.
Atlanta has the better public transportation system and can get around easier.
Chattanooga has the natural beauty and the mountains are in view everywhere you go in Chattanooga.
Atlanta is a higher cost of living, but still doable.
Air quality in Chattanooga is better.
Both are about the same temperature and weather wise.
Atlanta has more traffic.
