Fill the tank with fuel, no start. Code P0496 Evap flow sensed while in non-purge mode. I think maybe the charcoal can is full of gas, but I work on cranes, not cars. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

There is a valve (accessible in the engine bay) that controls the flow of vapors from the can to the engine during cold start and then shuts off. If this valve is malfunctioning it can cause that trouble code. The cost to replace even at a dealer is less than $100. It's a pretty common fail component on some GM vehicles. If you get a shop manual and can find the valve and have the fuel line disconnect tools, it should be a relatively quick and cheap fix. Just make sure you disconnect the battery for about 10 minutes to reset the ECM and clear the code after you fix it. If you don't have the time and tools though, it is a cheap fix even at the dealer.

Are you talking about the purge solenoid? I have an antique, and I mean antique, OTC genysis. I can manually run both the purge and vent solenoids and they, well, I can here the vent open and close, and the purge valve I can hear clicking, and can blow through it when it is open. Being a relatively inexpensive part, I may change it out anyway. The part that concerns me is that canister. That looks like a real SOB to get to.
Thanks for the help

Yes, I was referring to the purge solenoid. 99% of the time that is the issue associated with that trouble code. I wouldn't completely write off the canister being a problem, but I would start with the solenoid.
