We are totally unfamiliar to Chicago suburbs. I will be working in Hoffman estates and we need to find a home in an area with in easy commutable distance to hoffman estates with excellent schools: one kid is in elementary and other is preschooler. We are looking for single family homes not more than 20 years old, and in an safe area with nearby shopping and with easy access to downtown by train. Our range is around 450-650k.
Our agent suggested barrington, arlington heights, palatine,Mt. Prospect. Please let us know if there are any other areas to consider. Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Barrington may be a little on the top end if your budget, but with that budget all the other towns are in play. I've heard that out of all the ones you mentioned, people say that the Arlington heights area has the best schools. I don't know the particular district number though. Far as commute time, Palatine=5-15 minutes (depends on where you work) Arlington Heights to Hoffman Estates is about 15-20 minutes, Mount Prospect 20-30 minutes, and Barrington is about 15-20 minutes. What about Hoffman estates itself? Where in Hoffman will you be working?

I would consider homes older than 20 years.. often they are of better quality than newer homes .. like our 60's ranch we are listing.. have had construction people say these houses are rocks.. built better than new construction these days.

I have been reading a lot about these towns and I think barrington and arlington heights may be a good choice for us based on the schools but I have never been there. I will be working in NW part of Hoffman estates.
How is south barrington? Can we get something for $650 K there or are the homes too old there?
Which other ares are best based on the schools?

You want to be in Barrington, not South Barrington.

South Barrington area average home prices are in the 7 figures. Since you are working in the NW section of Hoffman Estates, you might be close to west dundee and elgin. I don't know anything about their schools but they are in a close proximity of Hoffman Estates, specifically the NW section. Hoffman Estates is laid out really weird if you look at a map of it. It has really crazy borders.

All I can say about that whole area is congestion, congestion, congestion, traffic is outrageous. I wouldn't limit myself to only homes not more then 20 years old because you are eliminating a big inventory of nice homes. Not sure what your reason for that is, but as another poster said, older homes were built incredibly more solid then homes in the past 20-25 years. As long as a home has been kept up and all the mechanical parts of a home aren't old, furnace, water heater, etc. you should look at older homes also. Some people have really updated older homes in very good ways.
