Moving Back to Cincinnati--Trade Schools (Wilson: sales, apartments, construction)

I went to college in Cincinnati and the place still has a strong pull for me. I'm considering going to trade school for HVAC when I go back.

Anyone know how the trades (plumbling, electricians, HVAC...etc) are doing financially with the recession in Cincinnati?

I just have a liberal arts degree and it hasn't gotten me anywhere thus far. I went to XU and I was hoping it would maybe pull some weight with an employer or two. Anyone on here want to hire me?

I don't want to go back unless I can secure a job. Any advice in terms of jobs with my experience?

Since you haven't stated your experience it will be hard to respond based on that.

XU is one of the best employers in the region and has recently expanded their physical plant considerably. I would apply there.

You mention the trades, but don't state whether you have any experience. Residential construction is definitely down considerably, commercial maybe not as bad but not good.

Everyone I know in the sales side of the construction materials supply industry is having a rough time, several laid off due to reduced sales volume. I know some with years experience in sales who are now taking any short-term remodel, etc. job they can find to stay afloat.

I have one friend in HVAC who manages these needs for a large apartment investment group. He is doing fine as the apartments are still there and also the need. He had his own HVAC company but gave it up to go to work for the investment group. He says the reduced stress and aggravation changed his life. He jokes now I work with their money not mine. But I know him too well, he will get maximum value for what they are spending and treat it like it is his own.

As Wilson mentioned, contact XU and see if they will hire you to manage specific needs of the newer properties they have constructed.

i feel like the trades here are pretty strong or at least rates are high. i have a family member in northern ohio who is a contractor and he always finds cincinnati rates for plumbing, electric, etc jaw-dropping. i have to agree. zins plumbing, for example, charges a hunderd bucks to replace a toilet handle.

I'm probably going to be moving back there this summer and then going to school by the end of the month. Can't handle Chicago anymore--crazy town.
