Richmond Cohousing is working with a developer to build a diverse, multi-generational, urban cohousing community in downtown Richmond, Virginia. The developer owns the land and plans are with the city for approval with anticipated groundbreaking this spring and move-in early 2020.
Cohousing focuses on community, with a balance of shared space/resources and private dwellings. The building will have ample "common space" including a first floor dining area, kids room, storage/workshop space, and a rooftop deck. Each family owns their own conventional unit similar to a traditional condo building, but there is an emphasis on encouraging a sense of community through design, use of space, and (optional) community meals/activities.
Our condo-style building will have 19 single-level one-, two- and three-bedroom units on four floors with prices ranging from $180k to $400k.
Our site is in the Manchester neighborhood at 901 Porter Street. This historic area is just over the James River from downtown and walkable or bikable to many attractive features including a library, restaurants (and two breweries!), shops, playgrounds and pocket parks, a large farmer’s market, and outdoor activities at the river. Public transit and bike lines are expanding throughout the area.
