I'm skeptical of this comment. Besides, you're also rather vague. What form of RTA are people getting shot/robbed on? I can assure, it is not on the Rapid Transit. I haven't even heard of anyone being shot or robbed on the bus. Maybe somewhere near a bus stop, but not on buses. If someone had been shot on a train, even once, that would have been a headline story. And I haven't seen anything of the sort. Can you provide and article? Some specifics?

You didnt hear about it? There have been at least 3 or 4 news stories about crimes on or right near the RTA (Rapid Transit) system just this year. On of the reports a guy and his 8 year old son were getting on the RTA and some kids shot at him and some people on the train had to duck, noone got hit there but later the same kids shot and killed a guy on the Eastside. Another report earlier in the year a guy got robbed on the RTA. There was a murder on one last year I think. Heres one of the incidents from 5 days ago:

Ill try to find some the other reports. Im not saying this happens everyday, but it definitely isnt as safe as some people think.

I wouldn't think RTA is a safest either. There have been a number of stabbings and assaults of sorts on the buses, and I assume the Rapid too. The one that comes to mind was the stabbing within the first week of the Trolley type buses running on Euclid.

OK Cle, fair enough. I was out of town and obviously missed this one... RTA needs better security, no doubt. Many stations, like Woodhill on the Blue/Green lines, are not subways, but open air below street level. At night, they can be intimidating. But this seems more a random act by a couple knuckleheads, one of whom was, apparently, the child molester of a daughter of the man this young fool shot at. I wouldn't want to scare people away from transit just because of this one act. RTA is generally very safe, but hey Cleveland's a big city like anyplace else. I know a trolley driver, downtown, was stabbed by a mentally challenged individual... Stuff happens.

I ride the RTA everyday...both train and bus. Take the news stories for what their worth--stuff happens. I personally can't wait until the Silver Line is finished.

Now that I think back probably the worst looking area I have ever seen in Cleveland was on Holton Ave. I was there about 2 years ago and I dont remember how or why I was there but it was the worst area I have seen in Cleveland, and thats saying a lot. Its in the Valley close to E 79th St and Kinsman I think. The street was about a mile long and literally 95% vacant and abandoned. It was pretty much all vacant lots and falling down houses and buildings. Also the whole area was surrounded by areas that are just as bad, it was also pretty close to Garden Valley projects and all of that, really bad area.

That's exactly the area the Blue/Green rapid transit rides through overhead I mentioned. It's a very difficult area.

We may be moving for a job opportunity in Cleveland. I am looking at all these bad parts of the city. It seems as though it's all bad. I would love it if you can narrow it down for me to the safest, yet within a 20-30 minute commute to downtown. I don't care about anything else but "safe". I don't have young children. I don't care about shopping. I don't care about entertainment. I just want to settle in somewhere where i may have a small area to garden. I'd like friendly neighbors. I think that's about it.
What ya got?

The westside & south suburbs that are about a 30 min commute from downtown are decent. Cities such as Lakewood, Rocky River, North Royalton, Strongville, Independence. Cities on the eastside such as Beachwood, Shaker Heights, Pepper Pike, Chargrin Falls are very nice.
Much will depend on what you can afford economically.
No city in the US is immune from crime. If you avoid what is considered Cleveland Proper you will be fine.
