Most of Shaker Heights is completely safe. Over the boarder into Cleveland you start to enter some dangerous areas. Shaker also has great public schools.

I am also new to the Cleveland area. I'm looking for a good place to buy a house within about 30-35 minutes of downtown (I'll be working on 9th street close to the lake). I'm looking to spend about 150-175k for a house in a very safe, more small-townlike area. I hope to find one on a larger lot - maybe a half-acre or more. I've been reading some of the other posts and think I would prefer being west or south, where the drive appears to be a little less to downtown. I don't care for trendy areas especially but prefer a little more space. I also would like to be not too far from bus lines, though maybe that's asking too much.

Thanks, Lou
I think you would like Medina. Also Brunswick or Strongsville. Really most of the westside and southside suburbs would be fine though.

Are any seeing big increases in property taxes? Could a new highway going in disrupt a community? This is the stuff I'm looking for.

Thanks, Lou
Well the westside is like this: Inside the city limits of Cleveland theres some really rough areas, some average areas, and some good areas. Outside of Cleveland most the westside and southside suburbs are fine. Once you get further out the city of Lorain is rough, Elyria has rough areas as does Oberlin.

I will admit that the east of the city of Cleveland is very sketchy except for a very few areas. The nice east side areas include: Shaker Square, Larchmere, Little Italy, University Circle, and North Collinwood.

So, if you are a flaming racist the city's east side and eastern suburbs are not for you.

I also want to clear up negative comments about the Bedford area. The city of Bedford is still majority white and is very safe. the Bedford City Schools consistently rate acceptably.

The student body is majority black. Also, Bedford Heights, and Oakwood Village, in the Bedford City School District, have become popular destinations for well educated upper-middle class black families.
The Westside of Cleveland (city limits) is very diverse now. The black % on the westside is constantly increasing. I go back to my old neighborhood and see Puerto Rican, other hispanic, Black, Arab, Mixed, some white. Cleveland is only around 1/3 white now and on the westside the only areas I would consider near "all white" are West Park (minus 130th/Bellaire area and Riverside Park), South/Old Brooklyn and part of Edgewater.
