East St. Louis only had 25 murders last year, which is still really bad. East St. Louis is probably the worst city in America along with Camden, and a few other small cities. Cities with under 10,000 people shouldnt even count though, thats smaller then a neighborhood. East St. Louis is basically a less urban, spread out version of East Cleveland. East Cleveland has about 30,000 people in 3 sq. miles, and East St. Louis has about 30,000 people in 11 sq. miles.

Default Homicide statistics?

Has anyone seen a statistical breakdown of Cleveland's homicides, by location, age, race, gender, and circumstances (domestic violence, gang-related, etc.)? Or even a list of all 120+ murders so far? We all probably think we know the likely results, but I'd like to see them nevertheless.

There was just another murder close to Slavic Village. Clevelands murder count is now at 122. We already passed last years murder number of 119.

Default Cleveland lacks leadership

I've noticed that the current mayor of Cleveland, Frank Jackson, has said and seemingly done very little about the crime situation in Cleveland. Other than making a failed attempt to "hire more police", there simply seems no strong voice about what to do about all of the conditions that lead to crime (e.g. generations of drug addicts who produce children that they cannot take care of, elderly/grandparents raising children due to their own kids being on drugs or incarcerated, violent youth gangs controlling communities, slum landlords, terrible public school system, absolutely zero jobs, a sinking middle class due to companies like Ford and Xerox vacating the city, parolees re-entering communities with no job or educational attainment, etc..etc... Where is the leadership?!?

In east Cleveland the primary problem is poverty and violent gangs while on the west side economic shifting has caused an increase in bankruptcy, increase in foreclosures, etc... As well, drug use is prevalent in all areas of the city and elderly folks are pushed to the economic brink trying to pay for prescription drugs, huge heating bills, etc... It's a terrible situation all around.

The crime problem is linked directly to all of the conditions that stem from clustered poverty and youth who are neglected, abused, and forced to join block gangs. The gangs work because one is literally, by address alone, born into their "sect". That is, whether you like it or not, if you live on a particular street, you are considered in defense of that particular territory. Most kids find it most wise to simply play an active role in the gang because to not do so means that you're not protected either from your own neighbors NOR from outside forces.

Sadly, a good portion of the parents who are actually trying to teach their kids to get an education, stay out of the gangs etc...are outnumbered by gangs who have considerable power and influence. The homicides are a result of the real disputes that gang members have against other members. However, rather than use the old school method of settling disagreements, even very young gang members are willing to shoot, kill, etc... ---usually just to get a street rep or because the politics of their rivalries are, to them, serious and real.

The only way to stop the killing is to do what was done in New Orleans: separate the poor people by any means necessary and don't allow them to re-cluster.

Cleveland needs a strong mayor and stronger leadership.

Default 2nd answer to your question

lets just say #125 was clevelands last murder this year.. divide 125 by clevelands population (roughly 435,000). that would give cleveland a murder rate of 28.73 per 100,000 people. not good.

Thank you 1Water for the reply.

Do you have a link to the story?

I would like to discuss some of the victims here to make it more "real". I want to know their story. Some people lump people together as "involved in drugs and gangs" and some how diminish their importance or the significance of their death.

This murder may have nothing to do with those things but I have seen it alot of times with Cleveland Homicides or other cities and people saying "If you just stay away from gangs you will be ok," When there is obviously alot of people killed who aren't in the drug business or gangs and even if someone is in a gang doesn't meen they deserve to die.
