We like to walk on deserted winter beaches. Would Duck or Kitty Hawk be a good place to visit in January?

We know it will be cold. We're fine with that. But where to go to have some neat places to walk, dine, etc.

Thanks for your recommendations.

I know Kitty Hawk has a year-round population. Duck is more remote, and I am not sure how many restaurants would be open.

I would contact a few of the larger hotels and ask about the dining situation in the winter. I would check the Sanderling Resort if you are interested in Duck.

Also search through past messages, as there probably have been comments on OBX in the the winter. My experience of the OBX in November was that the weather was very pleasant. No restaurants were nearby, so we cooked at the house. Sam and Omies at Nags Head was open, and was very good.

I have family there in Kitty Hawk and it would be my pick. There are quite a few year round restaurants there of all types. January can be quite nice or even snowy. Just depends.

It might be warm. We went to OBX for New Years Eve 2000, and if I recall it was about 70 degrees. We watched fireworks on the beach.

It's a bit of a crap shoot on Sunset and OIB. The sand will be chilly but the air can be warm, the water will definitely be very cold! We golf all through the winter down here. Good shelling in the winter though!

Big difference in drive time to Duck/Kitty Hawk area vs the OIB or Sunset area.

Check the Buxton area , there will be dining to be had but perhaps not enough choices for you.
