Hi! We are currently living in a suburban part of Orlando and we have been saving for a house for the past 2 years, but Orlando prices have skyrocketed and we are not able to afford what we want in the area we are living or really anywhere in Florida. Florida has gotten SO expensive!

With that said, we have been researching other areas to live that are not in the state. I stumbled across Jacksonville and have been interested in moving to the area due to the affordability and the nearby beach access. It will be me, my mom and my daughter (9). I am interested in some of the townhomes that are available. I am currently working from home.

For the record, I am not expecting Jacksonville to be anything like Orlando. We actually rarely go into the city. I can't stand the Orlando traffic. We are mainly looking for a town with sort of a suburban feel - shopping areas like Walmart, Target, a mall, Marshalls, TJ Maxx, etc. Basic places to eat, etc. We are also interested in the outdoors. I love parks and bike trails and the beach, obviously. We are not interested in bars, clubs, etc.

What would you say are Jacksonville's best attributes? What are the best parks? Also, does Jacksonville have a public pool? We will NOT have access to any amenities in Camp Lejeune. We are not military affiliated.

We are very family focused. We like shopping, eating out, going to movies, swimming, going to the beach, and going to festivals/town events. Thanks.

One of the short-comings of the area is the lack of a public swimming pool. There is a Courts Plus and Onslow Fitness, private clubs which you can join as a family.
Otherwise, Jacksonville is what you describe. Prices are reasonable, and it is safe. It is also boring and lacking in attractiveness. I suggest you also look at townhouses in Hampstead or Surf City. Also look for developments with pools and other amenities.

I also suggest looking at Cape Carteret, Newport and Morehead City. They have decent schools and private swim clubs, and easy access to the beaches. The major shopping is in Jacksonville.

What is your budget for a house or townhouse?

Thanks for the replies! I have looked into some of those other communities, but the lack of shopping and restaurants keeps me away. We would prefer to live in a community with around 50,000 people or more so we don't need to drive far to get what we need. Although some of those beach towns will be on the agenda to visit!

A community pool is not necessary, but would have been a plus. It sounds like Jacksonville pretty much checks all of our boxes. Our budget for a townhome is going to be on the low end - we are looking at what is under $150K for a townhouse or under $200K for a regular house.

Just checking Zillow there are:

6 Town homes
about 20 homes

3 Bdrm and 2 Bath

They range in the 200's and below.

The family should be aware that the residents of these low-priced homes are likely to be young military families. They have to move every 2-3 years and the transience of the neighborhood may be bothersome.
