So I'm registering my automobile at the Registry on Neuse Blvd, getting my new plates and registration. At the conclusion of the transaction after paying all the numerous registration fee's ($573.00) ... there comes a rather odd request.
"That'll be five dollars in cash for the for the Notery please?"
I hand the women the debit card back again..."No, no that must be in cash." Says she.
So like many people, I don't carry cash...because in this day and age that's what cards are for. But I do manage to dig up two singles.
The women behind the counter expects me to go to my bank or a store...get three bucks...come back and stand in line again to pay her the five frigging dollars... "only payable in cash" to pickup my plates and registration!
Yes, I kid you not!
A nice women is observing all this, walks to me and hands me three singles and returns to line, shaking her head, not believing what she is observing. Naturally I thank her.
It's bad enough that when buying a home in New Bern the money accompanying an offer on a home for sale is NON- REFUNDABLE. (If you decide the house isn't for you because the air conditioning doesn't function, the home owner selling the house gets to "swallow" your deposit money.)
Every license plate agency office I've been in NC charges $5 cash for notary. They also all have had atms in them. The money goes straight to the individual who notarizes the document, thus cash only.
Assuming "New Bern" has anything to do with either situation you describe is dumb. The city of New Bern has nothing to do with it. And I don't think the woman was shaking her head at what you thought she was.
There is plenty of "Shame on New Bern" to go around, but paying $5.00 cash to a person at the DMV office is not one of them. Having said that, there is also plenty of "Shame on DMV Office" available too!
