Right. By that time, mass production had gotten the better of the hobby, and aside from Upper Deck, a decline in design and photo quality. Not so the case anymore....Upper Deck caused everyone to eventually step up their game. An example...last Sunday, I was at a shop in New Hampshire, and he had unopened cello packs of 1990 Fleer for fifty cents. Back in 1990, those were about four bucks. lol.
I am proud to say I own quite a bit of cardboard pre-1980...the 68's with their burlap look background are great...a bit tough to get in near mint to mint shape, but for me, it's the thrill of the chase. Save for trading doubles through the years, I have every card ever pulled from a pack or bought at a show. By the way, if anyone wants to rid themselves of their extra cards, let me know.
Heh, cmoertl. If you're in the Boise market, you're my competition for trying to buy the old cards. And you're winning, because I've only had one good find in a year. It just amazes me to see CL ads:
"Over 10000 cards, some going back to 1990 and a few even from the 1980s! Many rookie cards! I do not know what all I have but they are taking up space and frankly, I'm one of Boise's many call center underemployed and need to pay off my payday loan! They are easily worth $2000 but this is a HUGE BARGAIN at $150! Someone is going to get a bonanza!"
Okay, I editorialized a bit on the payday loan part. But then I see the same ad over. And over. And over. And the individual seems to continue to insist on this $150 value in spite of the market's evidence, which is that no one will give $150 for the cards. It's bad on foreign coins too. People think that if it has a swastika on it, it's automatically a $15 coin, and so on. I've stopped even trying to buy foreign coin batches on CL because I'm sick of being told they're worth more than I know they are.
I know this is any old thread, but please don't jump on me for the bump.
Does anyone know when the new Bowman Chrome baseball cards will be released?
It's good to see an active thread regarding card collecting. I checked on this and I couldn't see anything regarding exactly when they will be for sale to the public. What I did see was one beautiful card--love the "jazzed up" autograph at the bottom of the card!
It's been years since I collected--would have thought they would be out by now. If your local sports card store doesn't have an idea, I'd e-mail or maybe even call the company to see what's up here.
I collected baseball (and some football) cards when I was I kid. My collection basically runs from around 1968 to 1977.
I have some that might be noteworthy: Rookie Cards for Reggie Jackson, Pete Rose, Nolan Ryan, and some others. Plus the final cards of Willie Mays and Roberto Clemente.
Around 2000 or so, I finally unearthed them from my parents' attic so I could properly organize them. I feared the heat would have damaged them, but they were in shoe boxes under lots of other boxes, so no issues. I made several trips to the local card shop to purchase storage materials. Brought back a lot of memories. I even sent doubles out with SASE to players for autographs.
A previous poster said it and the guy who owns the card shop says it too: Collect what you like, not what you think will be worth money.

Well there's a young stud pitcher in my Twins organization and he doesn't have a rookie card yet. I didn't know Rooker was going to be this stud and now his best rookie cards are already out of my price range.
From now on I want to get all our players' rookie cards when they are still way down in the minors, before any of them become better players.

I have read some articles here and there about guys who do that. Microfocus on a AAA team and eventually you end up with signed ball, card or jersey of player who hits big.
I forgot all about Magic cards. All my cards were from the Beta series because that's when I played. I gave my cards away about 10-15 years ago but I don't remember who I gave them to. Seems like they are now worth $10-100 EACH and a few are in the THOUSANDS like my Ancestral Recall, Tundra and Mox cards? That's my kids college tuition right there I hate you for bringing this realization on me.
My mother gave away two Mox pearls and one black lotus...all Beta edition...to one of her students years back cause she thought I was done with my collection. That was like 10,000 right there with those three cards!
