I have a few fire alarm boxes which includes 3 FDNY boxes.I used to have one of the big freestanding posts wih the torch top but sold it in the 80s, looking for another one though!
Here's one of mine
It has the rare door gong that works, most of the door gongs were removed decades ago, and most of the doors themselves were replaced in the 70s with the police/fire intercom.
The sound level is pretty loud;
Wow. Neat. I used to have a whole collection of fire alarm pull stations, strobes and pull boxes. I still have a brass fire hose twist tip and a hydrant 2" hose reducer. Found it in a building being remodeled
I managed to find and buy another of these freestanding cast-iron posts, it came from NYC but the seller was in North Carolina so I had a UPSstore go out to his house, pick this up, palletize it on 2 pallets and truck ship it to me here in Iowa.
There are a couple of parts I need to locate for it, but I'll be restoring it this summer.
So many great American artifacts that where just discarded or destroyed.
Great that there are people like you to keep touch stones from the past alive for future generations instead of just rotting away somewhere on a back forty out in the country or someones barn.
True, and a lot of these remain on the city streets but many are damaged, missing parts, vandalised and rusting away. Every year a few are lost when trucks and vehicles hit them.
After a little removing of the paint, the raised lettering begins to appear now:
I created an album from Google street view showing the fire alarm boxes on 29th and 30th st in Manhattan, out of 16 boxes I found, about half are non functional and missing parts, here's pictures of them and their descriptions:
