My son inherited his Uncle's Hot Wheel, and Matchbox collection and is, looking to sell them all. He has 5781 cars. Does anyone know where we can find a collector, that will buy the lot? We have checked every avenue in our State (North Carolina). Any suggestions would be grateful

Well... the good news is that the collection cost your son nothing. You could try listing chunks of the collection on eBay. How old is your son? Why doesn't he want to keep any of them?

Otherwise, what condition are the cars in? Do they have their original boxes? Search for like items on eBay in the "completed auctions" section to see what they actually sold for. Your son will get the most money for them by selling them one at a time on eBay. There is no rushing the selling process if you want to get the most money out of the collection.

Once you know the fair market selling price for them (by doing research on eBay), you could also try selling them at toy shows and any flea markets associated with car shows.

These Hot Wheel and Matchbox cars are very collectible, but not actually rare.

The best way to get rid of a collection that large is to make a hobby out of selling.

Thanks for suggestions.

My son is 25 yrs old. The cars are in excellent condition, they are stored in packing crates. My Brother was an avid collector, along with collecting Star Trek items. Just the Hot Wheel cars alone he has over 5,000.

We will be doing alot of selling at the flea markets for a while.

I hope that you save some of the best ones to keep for your future grandchildren. I would think that your late brother's desire was for your son to keep the collection intact. Otherwise, he would have just directed the estate to auction it all off and give the money to your son.

Just remember that the collection was an important part of your late brother's childhood. The bequest shouldn't be about cashing out the collection.

As the car age winds down and ends, so goes the toy car market.

Since someone already start this thread.
Let's talk about hot wheels collection here
I collecting it since -+5 years ago. Most of my collection is just mainlines. I document it pretty good in a website(https://sites.google.com/site/hotwheels1314/).
So when I want look some particular car, i just open it anywhere, anytime
My location at Buffalo, but i will move to Boston soon or later.
Competition to collect hot wheels here is bad. local collector + neighbor(canada) collector always clear out new stock in stores!
So... how's competitive in your city?

Go to the local flee market and find the HW sellers there. Ask them if they are interested in buying the lot. They may buy them for .25-.50 a car. Take samples of the cars in containers with you.

Ebay. Depending on the model, you can get premious prices there as a lot of collectors try to outbid each other. Usually before we chuck out kids hot wheels in the donation bin, I check on ebay and sometimes see a car selling for $5-10 plus shipping and sell it there.

Still sealed in packages would go for even more. I've sold off a number of special hot wheels cars in packages for $100 or so. All depends on what the car is.

I wouldn't sell them off as a lot just yet. Try and cherry pick and then dump the rest once you've gone through the whole collection
