This was sent home during WWII from somewhere in Asia. Both the sender and recipient are long deceased. I have had no luck searching for something comparable. The figures seem to be like Lawrence of Arabia. It is a large bed covering. Embroidered on a satin silky background. The picture her is just one corner of it. I searched under Persian and under Turkish with no luck. Any ideas?
I'm no embroidery expert but I don't see how it can be Persian or Turkish as Islam doesn't allow depictions of people or animals. The art in Islamic countries is abstract. It's very beautiful. Is the motif as seen in the picture repeated on the spread? Was it meant to be a bed covering or was it just used for that? I was thinking that you might look up places US troops were during the Second World War and search for embroidery styles of those regions.
IMO it's machine made embroidery, not hand stitched. It could be from Turkey, Hong Kong, Japan or India. Decorative themes like that know no international boundaries.
BTW this sort of design could have been made in a factory anywhere, including the US. I'm not saying that it's American, based on your family's history with this item, but that an American factory could have made it. However, even back then, foreign labour was much cheaper than American labour.
I agree it looks like machine embroidery to me. Might be from one of the German textile factories.
It's really lovely
