More white than the gray look. The black lid is glass and held on by a wire snap.

What is it's name?

It is a very old fashioned canning jar for home canning. There was a rubber ring that was placed on the top of the jar, then the lid was put on, and the wire strap pulled onto the top to hold it on.

Most were clear glass. I know as my grandmother had a bunch of them, and in the 1930s and '40s you could buy those rubber rings at the grocery store in the same area they sold other canning supplies. They also sold new jars. She used them for canning pickles, etc.

The one you have is not clear glass, so was used for special projects. It may not even be that old, and made to hold a certain type product where the jars would be kept when empty, and the label has been washed off of it.

The lid on mine is chipped and I was hoping to find a replacement. I searched Ebay and various search terms on Google image and never really found the exact one.

I'd name it Paul or maybe Bob.

I'd say it's a canning or pickling crock and the lid should be ceramic like the body looks. Maybe some of those terms will help your search for the part.
