I have a large 1947 one-page magazine advertisement (14 x 10” in size and under a glass case) of a photograph and design layout of famous and well known 1947 baseball players Ted Williams and Stan Musial advertising Chesterfield cigarettes that I personally had autographed by both Ted Williams and Stan Musial in person while they were both still alive (they're both dead now) at a baseball card collecting convention way back sometime in the early to mid 1980’s. I’m now wishing to sell this autographed advertisement but I realize I could potentially run into problems trying to sell it (especially for maximum big bucks) since I don’t have a “certificate of authenticity” for it.
My question is this: Is it possible for me to somehow obtain a “certificate of authenticity” for it today, and if so, how would I go about doing it? If so, how can I tell if the certifier is themselves legitimate and trustworthy of certifying things, especially this thing (autographs of famous and well known people)?
From my understanding there are COA companies out there but they are essentially worthless, as there are so many fake and unethical COA dealers that simply want your money and will sign off on anything. Any buyer paying big bucks will know this. Legitimate dealers not only look at the signature, but the provenance of the document - actually trace the ownership from the baseball heroes to your hand. Saying you bought it from a convention 30 years ago will simply not work unless maybe it has a traceable number or something.
And let's face it - likely what you have are fake signatures anyways. The market is ripe with it.
The big name auction houses can authenticate the item themselves. Sotheby's Skinner, Julien's, RRauction, etc.
