I'm not sure where to put this post but I'm hoping those with antique experience may have some suggestions.

I have a Lane cedar chest from about 1973 that I am refinishing. I am not refinishing to sell, I'm simply refinishing to use it as it has sentimental value to me.

One issue that I'm having is that the drawer pulls are 5 3/4 inches center to center and next to nobody has that size, in a style I want. I've been thinking, I like the look of the original drawer pulls, it's just that they are the wrong color. I'm painting the chest navy blue and want shiny brass colored pulls. So my question is - do people electroplate their knobs/pulls? Spray paint? (how's the wear and tear with that?)

I'm just wondering what my options are here.

Thanks!

The originals might be brass or brass color base metal underneath whatever the present finish is. Yes, you could metal paint them whatever color you want, just be certain to remove/sand off the original finish first.

Pulls are likely to be brass plated steel - why don't you clean off the current finish carefully - you may well be able to polish using a minimally abrasive polish, and spray with a clear lacquer.
