You might want to visit first, Denver is much different than the western slope, which is much different than the southern part of the state. California has moved to Colorado so you really won't be escaping it here, very liberal left wing governor and politics.

Might visit Montrose, Delta, Ouray, Ridgway. I would seriously consider Cedaredge too.

Good luck.

Not really. Central Palisade feels like the Midwest. Tree lined streets and orchards. As you move up in elevation, it’s all tall pines. The Grand Mesa is loaded with Aspen and pine. Piñon Mesa is an Aspen lover’s paradise. Yes, a lot of the valley is high desert, but there are plenty of trees if you just look around.
There are some photos in this thread showing the true colors of the valley.

Less than $400,000 is going to be tricky in some of the towns named here. Unless you're willing to live in a condo/townhome. In the cheaper/more rural areas, do count on schools to be underfunded and to likely offer less than what you have on the West coast. In fact, in many parts of Colorado, schools were only 4-days-a-week even before Covid. When you pay low taxes you get limited services, school opportunities included.

Under 400k, would mainly look at Bayfield, Woodland Park, Hayden and Meeker from my list.

Salida, Monument, Berthoud might work if you'd take a below median priced place because of size, age, condition.

The named resort adjacent towns on I-70 may be too pricey but look closely if interested.

When you said 7500 or less and the rest, I didn't think below 2,000 people. There are options below 2,000 and some were mentioned recently. Medical for small places in most cases will involve bigger cities. How close is close enough for people varies. 25 miles, 50 or 100?

Schools by ratings, some might take a 6 of 10. Some nonetheless than a 8. How much difference there is miggt be hard to determine. Looking close on internet, by phone and in person might clarify but it will still be a guess. Generally bigger schools / wealthier places will be better guesses for many.
