Colorado is a naturally arid climate. The only reason the mountains support any forest is because of the underground springs of water and the snowmelt, if it weren’t for that the mountains would probably be a desert or a grassland like the plains only it would be a montane grassland.

Up here in the mountains we get a tremendous amount of moisture in the form of fog or mist. In addition to their efficient root systems, pines needles pull moisture from the air and transmit it to the roots.

FIFY. Very little of Colorado is truly within an arid climate zone. If the Eastern Plains had a slightly lower evapotranspiration rate the climate would be continental instead of semi-arid steppe.
