Wouldn't it be interesting to know whose palms were greased to get a monopoly on emissions testing in the state?\This is up there with current Federal law prohibiting medicare from negotiating prices on pharmaceuticals.

In other states in which I've lived, emissions testing was handled by gas stations/repair shops.

It's not an entirely unreasonable solution (to use a contractor), especially in a state with a relatively small population. But I am a bit bothered at finding how... opaque their presence and operation is, with no public accountability.

I also suspect all that data collection is quite valuable to... someone. Which is why it's not available on either a collective-stats basis or an individual basis as is vehicle history.

I think we need to escalate this question.

Concur. There are problems with this, such as when California (one of the first states to do so) required a wholesale upgrade of testing systems, meaning some 10k(?) shops had to buy/lease new equipment to stay in the game. But it does make it something of a commodity instead of either a state-run operation or — possibly worse — a captive/preferential vendor operation.

Asking again if anyone has ever (1) received a pass from RapidScreen or (2) received notice of their vehicle being a gross polluter. Pass the question to other venues and sources you might have.

It used to be that way here, too. My uncle's bread and butter in his car shop was emissions testing and when the state decided they didn't require it anymore it really hurt his bottom line.

I have had Rapid Scan exempt our car from a trip to the testing station once in 20 years.
Now that we only put 2000 miles per year on the car, we never drive by a Rapid Scan device.
Our next car will be a BEV.
