Right now I hear sound through the tiny speakers. I have earbuds that fit in the headphone jack but no sound comes through them.
I'm assuming I have to select the headphone jack somehow? But can't find it.
Man I feel stupid.
This is Windows XP that came with a EeePC netbook.
I checked under accessories/entertainment but all that's there is volume control and sound recorder.

Is it possible the PC only puts out one signal or another and not both? Try unplugging the speakers.
Also, click on the little speaker on the bottom right of the tray and click advanced and see if the speaker jack is enabled and on.

Oh, nevermind. Wish there was delete. I tried again and it seems to work although with a lot of variation depending on source.

How exactly would you unplug the internal speakers on a netbook?

Use the Jaws of Life on it?

Of course, such a tool is moderately imprecise...

If you have windows 7 on the machine, check your Playback devices (there should be a speaker icon on the bottom right of your task bar, right click on it and select Playback devices).

You can specify the devices that you play and record from... you can set a different one for communications applications (i.e. video/voice calls etc). or if you have HDMI hook up to your TV, this is how you set up the sound to play out to your tv.
