My not-very-tech-savvy husband hooked up a sound bar to our tv. Since it's been set up, we have to push the sound up on both the tv AND the sound bar in order to hear it. Even then we can't hear it very well.

Do we need a new sound bar? Tv? New husband?

Without knowing how it is hooked up because there are sometimes different ways to do this..

Turn up the sound on the TV to about half way and just leave it there.

Then you can control the volume from just the soundbar.

This is assuming you always want to use the soundbar when watching TV.

What Soundbar is it?

It depends on both the soundbar and the TV. On ours TV there is a separate place to plug in the soundbar "Digital Audio Out" (Optical) so we keep the TV sound off, but could have both on at once of we wanted. Some, possibly yours, is using an extension speaker output from the TV, RCA or earphone jack which is all they had on older ones. Have him look to see if there is another audio output on the back.

ANYWAY...
OP, we do need to know at the very least which TV you have. If it is older you may need to do what either of these gentlemen said.

However if they are newer you have much better options. Newer HDMI connections enable you to control a connected sound bar with a TV remote.

I ask so I can look it up or did you actually think I know about them automatically?

My mother has one. That one has the opposite problem, it's always way too loud.

So when I'm there, I have to turn down the sound on the soundbar, turn up the sound on the TV to a reasonable level and go from there.

I do know a thing or two about audio and connectivity by the way.

Several ways to hook up a soundbar. A low level connection like old fashioned RCA cables. Digital like optical and HDMI and Bluetooth. Come to think of it, I don't even know how my mothers is connected. I do know that it's difficult to get the right volume. On top of that, you are watching a movie or something and on certain scenes, the thing will blow you away. On my mother's soundbar, you turn up the volume on the TV and that also turns up the volume on the soundbar.
