I know how to dispose of a rechargable battery that is designed to be replaced such as in some tools, because, they are designed to be removed and replaced with a new battery. Lowes and Home Depot accept rechargeable batteries.

But, what about rechargeable batteries in a rechargeable toothbrush or a rechargeable screwdriver. They are sealed and not designed to be taken apart. Will they be accepted at a recycling event or in the case of a rechargeable screwdriver will the entire tool be accepted by Lowes or Home Depot?

We have a recycling event once a year where we can drop off various items to be recycled including most items that can be plugged into an outlet (like a microwave, a lamp or a power strip). I am just not sure they will accept an item that has a rechargeable battery that was never designed to be replaceable by a consumer.

How do you go about recycling such an item?

Check the website for the manufacturer, some will have an address that you can mail it too for recycling. Others will have recycling available at the retailers that sell their products. Our local dump (transfer Station) wont take them for recycling, most probably dump them, but hey do have a referral to a Call2Recycle program, which you may have there too, and if so, you would have to call to see if they take that kind of sealed item. I would guess that for those they will say just put it into the garbage.
