We have an indoor antenna and pick up the four major networks which are ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC. Everything good for well over a year without paid cable. Sunday about half way through an NFL game on CBS the message on the screen said "encrypted." On the TV the channel is 3-1. I changed channels in both directions, up and down past 3-1 and the lowest it goes is 3-2. It skips 3-1 and go to 64-3. I hoped it would work fine today. Still channel 3-1 is not there. Encrypted by who and why? Thanks.

What are the station call letters for channel 3-1, that you say is encrypted?
Ok, that is now an ATSC 3.0 station, and they ARE encrypting the CBS 3.0 stations across the whole country.
What device are you using to try to watch it? Maybe a SiliconDust HDHR 4k tuner? If so, those can't decrypt this as of yet.
I've asked others in the community and they say they are getting 3-1 fine. I'm trying to find out if they are using Amazon or other.
It's a major network and reasons to encrypted the whole country?
Everyone in the USA has been watching CBS their entire lives.

It's just the ATSC 3.0 broadcast of the station that's encrypted. The old ATSC 1.0 channel isn't encrypted.
How your tv set is picking up the 3.0 station, yet not decrypting it, that's the real question. Because tv sets with 3.0 tuners are supposed to be able to handle this encryption. Though there's some reports that some can NOT do so. I've never heard of an "Orion" brand tv, so I don't know anything about them. Does it say anywhere that it's "Nextgen certified"?
There is the problem, and specifically DRM encryption on ATSC 3.0.
A TV's ATSC 1.0 tuner, like what most people in the US use to tune OTA stations, won't have the problem. The Orion app is an outlier. Maybe there is a way to downgrade what Orion is tuning to support ATSC 1.0. What options are in the app settings?

Integrated Digital Tuner (ATSC, CLEAR, QAM)
