After being exposed to weather elements, heat, cold, rain, snow, ice for the past 11 years there can't be much left outside of small bone fragments...so I as well wonder why
I think I read somewhere a little while ago that before they start the new building on that site, there was some push to make sure that all the remains that can be accounted for are accounted for.
Certainly may be reopening some wounds for some, but may bring closure for others.
Here's what happened. New possible remains (bone fragments) were found (by accident) in an area that was previously unreachable -- not at the landfill, but at the WTC excavation site. Truckloads of newly excavated material will now be searched, and it is expected to take 8-10 weeks.
I wonder why, 11 years later they would decide to do this?
Most likely because SOME of the families have been pushing for years for the remaining debris at Fresh Kills to be sifted through again in the belief that not everything that could have been found was found. As of today, about 18 pieces that MAY be human remains have been recovered. These are not big bones or anything--they are tiny fragments.

This post doesn't really make sense. Building on what site? Fresh Kills is a closed landfill on Staten Island. I don't think there are any plans whatsoever to build anything there. If you're referring to the World Trade Center, you are hopelessly out of date. One World Trade Center, started in 2006, is almost finished, Four World Trade Center is almost finished, Three is under construction and the foundation for Two is under construction. The PATH Station is closer to completion than not, and the Memorial, which includes two pools where the original twin towers stood, opened on the tenth anniversary.
As to your last sentence, you are correct--some families are against this new search, while others champion it.

Oops--thanks, Blinx--lol, this is something I should know, but I didn't realize it was newly found stuff. I thought it was the buried material at Fresh Kills that was being resifted. Some of the families have been asking for that.

I think DNA testing will give a lot of families who still don't know for sure their missing died in the towers closure. Even when it's only a few fragments, it gives families something to bury and put to final rest at last.
