Recently retired and very active, and unlike most people, we want to leave Florida for a more suitable place to live up north. I'm originally from the DC area; my husband was born overseas. We cannot stand the close-minded and backward-thinking people in our area. So, we're looking for a place that's easy on taxes, not too far from the water, offers four seasons, with somewhat close proximity to major cities, and even the mountains, for weekend getaways.

Hoping to find a more progressive atmosphere with decent shopping, farmers markets, nature, and history.

Yes, we are researching and we are planning a visit (haven't been in that area for years), but I want to ask here: Am I daydreaming? Ideas? Many thanks!

I guess I am not going to be able to offer much definitively other than to say define "not too far from water" and water for what? Swimming? Boating?

Within an hour-and-a-half from the ocean, preferably. We also have canoes and love to swim.

If that is the case, during a normal summer you will never make it to the Beaches in an hour and a half. You might be better off going to the Jersey shore but I have no idea if that traffic would be as bad.

Newark DE would be an excellent choice..4 seasons..(winters are too long for me)..a couple of hours from the mountains of PA, or western MD..a couple of hours to DE beaches or Ocean City MD, Jersey shore is even closer..Newark is a college town, therefore kind of transient..probably more forward thinking than all of FL..best of luck..
