It was a popular event in Bridgeville. For the time being, the event is being held in Illinois. Will it find a new home in the Delmarva? Thoughts?

I think it will be difficult. They had another home many years back at the Dover speedway and it was cancelled due to insurance reasons. Then Ocean City agreed to take it on after the accident and that seemed like a good option as they were going to fire the pumpkins into the ocean. The problem was the ability to accurately measure the distance if it dropped into the ocean and they had none so that was it and it moved to Illinois.

Especially in this day an age insurance for such an event is astronomical.

Litigious people who sue for any and everything is more of a problem. Insurance companies are covering their potential loss. So anyone who sponsors any event is going to have to have big bucks for insurance and charge larger fees for attendees.

Funny this should be a topic of conversation, as it's a front page story on the Cape Gazette today.

Ron MacArthur
November 9, 2021

For nearly 30 years, the first week in November meant one thing to many people – World Championship Punkin Chunkin.

Thousands of spectators turned out each year to watch a variety of low- and high-tech machines fire pumpkins. As the event grew and more space was needed, it moved from farm to farm in Sussex County. During the last event in the county, air cannon teams were closing in on an unthinkable chunk of one mile.

Beginning in 2013 and 2014, the association ran into legal, insurance and logistics issues, and was forced to cancel the event six times over an eight-year period including 2014, ‘15, ‘17 and ‘18, before working out a deal to move the event to Illinois in 2019.

Thanks, members. I value your wisdom. They may have put the kaput on this in my neck of the woods (Mullica Hill) for the same reason. The orchard has been facing a crisis. It did seem to be a crowd-pleaser.

Default ITChunker

It's quite possible. I think a restructuring of the current WCPCA is in order first.
