Hey guys, I'm a 40 y/o male with a wife and son moving out of NYC and looking for a secondary home in the town of Wilmington. We understand the area has its rough parts but we are totally used to the streets of NY. We love the urban feel of things, food, culture and people. The wife and I are planning to rent 1st before we settle on a home or condo. I saw a few homes for rent on the 1200 of Lancaster Ave and another by 2600 of N Market Street. Could you tell me more about those areas? Rent is reasonable and the home looks decent inside.
Best, Jay

Neither of those options are great or even decent and would advise maybe some other options as the urban feel you're accustomed to in NYC differs in the Mid-Atlantic region (PA-DE-MD). If I may ask what is your budget? That would help make some good suitable recommendations.

Former NY'er here, but from the Beach area now, so I can't help with much, but I spent 30 plus years working in NYC and I would urge you to take some vacation time and look around. Things in person look way different than on paper or computer. No one here knows your tolerance for things.

I am confused about one thing. You indicate that you are looking for a "secondary" home, but are moving out of Brooklyn, so are you actually looking for a vacation home and have another home there or are you leaving NY for good?

I will be living half of the time in Brooklyn and the other half in DE. Would you guys know what area in Wilmington would be worth a shot in regards of culture and great community? Hilltop, Crompon Village, Hedgeville and or Trolly Sq

Compton Village is close to a lot of restaurants/bars and walking distance to the Amtrak/Septa station. Personally I would choose Trolley Square given its atmosphere, proximity to things to do and overall safety. Hilltop is similar to Trolley Square but not quite as nice in my opinion. Hedgeville is a very mixed bag and doesn't offer as much to do.

I dont think there is a house for $150 anywhere in the country at this point. I would think it would be at least $250 or more in that area.

There's 39 right now in Wilmington in the 100K-150K bracket. https://www.realtor.com/realestatean...-100000-150000

It's worth checking before making assumptions usually.

If I recall correctly much of Wilmington proper is pretty hood, like really no different from similar areas in Baltimore or Philly. I mean the streets of New York aren't all alike. Would you tell someone to buy in East NY, Brownsville?

There's some nice areas in Wilmington, primarily in the northwest of the city, but that's not where the 100-150k homes are either.

Little Italy and Hilltop are not the "hood".
