Delaware Crime Rate

I wonder if some people do, in fact, adequately "analyze" the attributes of Delaware before moving here. For example, some people might be convinced that what they want is simply a slower-paced, less costly place to live, perhaps in a 55+ community or a new development out in an unincorporated area downstate. If they then get dissatisfied with what they've bought into, it might be because they've miscalculated their own adaptability in terms of what the immediate area they've chosen has to offer. Some of these folks, for example, might find themselves happier in the relatively more urbanised north of the State, still hardly big city, and with property taxes higher than downstate but still much lower than what would be the case in neighboring States.

One has to reconcile oneself to the truth that so much in life is a compromise and that nothing is sustained perfection. It's largely all a trade-off.

I moved to Delaware about a year ago. I remember reading about high crime as well. However, that has not been my experience. Yes, there are some areas that have higher crime than others. I live in Sussex County near the beaches. Seaford and a couple of other towns are known to have higher crime and I guess those figures skew the stats for the entire county. Take a ride to DE and drive around (its not that big so it shouldn't take long!). Kent is nice but you may be bored there. At least in Sussex, there are great beaches and a "cool" beachy culture.

CaioNY--we're lucky. I don't think I've heard about any violent crime in my area (Ocean View/Bethany) the entire time I've lived here, and I've been here for eleven years. I take walks alone in the woods or in the middle of the night sometimes, and nobody ever bothers me. There have been some domestic violence and drug arrests in my area, but the domestics are (obviously) between family members or people residing together--none of the random crimes such as people being jumped, robbed, and/or assaulted like you hear about in other parts of the county. The biggest problem here would be petty theft (haven't had a home broken into in my development the entire time I've been here), and that is eliminated by keeping everything locked. The thieves here aren't very motivated--if it's not an easy steal, they just move on until they find the next unlocked car, shed, etc. However, even that nonsense has declined substantially this past year since a few drug addicted, thieving key players either went to prison or died from overdoses.

My husband's parents live in an older Seaford development, and their life is literally a living hell--their neighborhood has constant break-ins, squatters, drug dealers, prostitution houses, houses that have "wayward teens" living in them, etc. They have bullet holes in their home's siding, people steal their outdoor holiday decor, and somebody is constantly stealing the license plate off their cars. Needless to say, my husband is much happier here than he was living at his parents' house.

On a positive note prostitution arrests are up for the first time in a few years which means more women are out looking for work, lol.
