My family and I are possibly making a move to Delaware for a job my husband may take in Wilmington(J P Morgan Chase). We have no relatives in the area and will be moving from Chicago and I'm trying to do as much as I can from here but I really neeed some direction as to where I need to focus my search.

We are looking to rent for now and want to know areas that are safe, even if they are in neighboring states and I will gladly make a different thread if need be for that state but if anyone lives around the area any advice would be great.

I had been looking into St Andrews but it's really confusing, I've read reviews that were good and then read reviews that were bad and read reviews that the staff writes the actual good reviews and my brain is like AAAACCK! So if anyone knows of a safe convenient location within 30 miles radius form Wilmington that would be super!!

Thanks! Aalia

Welcome to Delaware. We moved from Chicagoland area (Lake County) 4 years ago and would be happy to pass alone what we've learned.

30 minute commute from downtown Wilmington is a very wide circle; commute times here are generally easy in comparison. Greenville, DE (Winnetka-like) is a 15 minute commute. Newark, a college town is 30 minutes and Middletown is 45 minutes at rush hour, 30 minutes non-rush.

We did tax comparisons prior to relocating and DE wins hands down. PA taxes compare to IL (real estate and income), MD are slightly higher and NJ the highest. DE income taxes top at 5.95%, real estate taxes are roughly 25% of IL and there is no sales tax. Unlike IL, DE's governments are fiscally sound and well managed. NJ is the only state (save CA) in worse shape than IL.

While I don't have any specific info on St Andrews in Bear, I can tell you that area should generally be safe. You may want to consider renting a bank foreclosure also. Delaware still has unsold home inventory in some very nice neighborhoods.
