Hi there,

I've experienced chronic gum pain where a frenectomy/gum graft was performed on my lower front gums for the past 2.5 years. I've seen lots of different dentists and doctors but none have been able to solve the problem.

I was recently referred to the Academy of Laser Dentistry by the dentist who performed the frenectomy/gum graft. He recommended that I look into doing laser therapy. I am currently searching for a dentist who is knowledgable in this area in San Diego. I've contacted some ALD certified dentists in the area but they don't do laser therapy for gum pain.

If you feel as though you may be able to help me or send me in the right direction for this unique problem please let me know and I would be extremely grateful.

History and potential factors for my chronic mouth pain:

• I'm a healthy 24 year old male residing in San Diego, CA.

• On Dec. 28th, 2011 I had gum graft surgery & frenectomy to correct receding gum line in Colorado.

• On June 8th, 2012 (about 6 months after the gum graft/frenectomy surgery) I put a small (capsule sized) amount of MDA (similar to MDMA) in my mouth at a concert which made direct contact with the graft area. The chemical temporarily gave my mouth an unpleasant chemical burning sensation but went away after about 30 minutes. This may or may not be related to the pain I experience.

• I've seen many different professionals regarding this issue with no luck in finding a solution or any real direction on how to solve it:

• Endodontist: Concluded there was nothing wrong with the roots of my teeth in that area by conducting a cold test

• Periodontist: Several Periodontists have looked at the area and said it looks normal and are not sure what the issue is

• Neurologist: I saw Neurologists at UCSD who were not sure what the issue is or how to solve it

Symptoms detailed description:

I experience frequent mouth pain where his frenectomy was (lower front gums). The pain and discomfort feels like some type of nerve damage and is always changing, and can be intense, throbbing, tingling pain for more than 24 hours, or I can be free of most symptoms for up to 24 hours at a time. Most of the time, there is a dull, aching discomfort. It feels like a pinching sensation on the inside of the lower front gums where the frenectomy was, and sometimes feels numbingly painful, similar to being very cold without the temperature sensation. The area is sensitive to cold and hot water, and seems to go away during and immediately following chewing on food. Over the past 2.5 years the overall sensation has not increased or decreased in intensity outside of its consistent pain spectrum (although it fluctuates in intensity on a daily basis within the pain spectrum).

Here's an image outlining where I feel the pain/discomfort.

Again, if you feel as though you may be able to help me or send me in the right direction for this unique problem please let me know and I would be extremely grateful.

Just saw your post and have similar experience. In September, I had crown lengthening (gum surgery) on a second molar. The tooth had broken at the gum line back in July. My discomfort appears to stem from inflammation of the gum tissue around the temporary crown. The sensation is either a burning or pinching feeling. Unlike you, I do not have temperature sensitivity. General dentist, periodontist, as well as endodontist (root canal on same tooth) are still shaking their heads. Curious - did you have absorbable sutures?

Hi Susan,

I'm not sure if I had absorbable satures, I just Googled them and learned what they are after you asked. That's a great question.

I'm going to ask my dentist right now. Thanks for the tip!

Hello, are you still having the problem now, as I see you first posted in June? Has anyone (specialist) been able to help you at all? I too have noticed that the sensation sometimes disappears after eating. Hmmm? At this very moment, I do not feel the discomfort but that could change at any time. Gee, I thought five months was a long time to put up with this problem. I cannot imagine dealing with it for 3 years. How do you manage? I was laid off from my job back in August and am finding it difficult to continue with the job search.

I have been doing Low Level Laser Therapy sessions and I'm not sure if it's helping, but my condition does seem to be getting better very slightly and at a slow pace. Below is a chart showing my mouth discomfort.

I manage by meditating, working out, and doing a lot of self development. However, the chronic discomfort is very annoying and can cause emotional stress. But I am focused on finding a long term solution. I am going to try acupuncture soon.

I hope you can find a solution and I will keep you posted if I do.

This is what I suggest. Purchase some Green Pastures fermented Cod Liver oil / High vitamin Butter oil blend. Take 2 teaspoons of that every day. If you experieince any improvement let me know and then you can do additional things.

Hi QuestOfTruth,

The Green Pastures fermented Cod Liver oil / High vitamin Butter oil blend sounds interesting. I'll look into it. Can you tell me why you're recommending it? What does it do specifically? Have you had success with it? If so, what was your situation and how did it help?

Thanks in advance!

Most Dental treatments and theories concentrate on the outside. Filling, drilling, sealant, external treatment with instruments or reinforcement with foreign materials. In some cases that is required but I believe the importance of treatment from the inside is often missed or forgotten.

In my quest for improving my health, I came across a book about the link between Dental health and diet. A Dentist called Weston A. Price spent a lifetime trying to find out the cause of tooth decay and cavities. In short, he discovered that some people that followed a diet rich in specific minerals had nearly zero decay or cavities but when they ate a western diet devoid of such minerals, they devloped cavities, decay and a host of other health problems. None of the people used toothbrushes or cleaned.

Weston A Price identified the minerals required for good dental health and also compiled a list of foods that can contribute to the best dental health and healing. The main ones required are vitamin A, D, E, calcium and K2 but standard Cod liver oils after deodorization and processing have none left other than the Omegas.

After I tried out Green Pastures fermented Cod Liver oil blend with High Vitamin Butter Oil (includes all required fat solubles), I started to notice the sensitivity and gum inflammation vanish. My teeth felt stronger, gums felt better and if I am to believe my Dental impression, a small cavity has vanished too.

If one was to have only vitamin A and D in their diet, this would not suffice. If you have calcium and D, that's not enough either because vitamin K2 directs the calcium into the right places via activation of a special protein (osteocalcin).

What Ive described above is the tip of the iceberg though. I would also recommend you use this too. Phytic acid content and grains in your diet can impede progress due to their effect on binding with minerals and preventing absorption (that can be beneficial in some cases though). I theorize that adequete digestive enzymes, specifically phytase can help with this. Note that many people cannot deal with the taste of the fermented Cod Liver Oil. They also have capsules but you get less for your money and both are expensive. I saw zero results from standard Cod Liver Oil.

You can also send Weston A. Price a question via his site too I think.

Wow! This is fascinating!

I definitely want to try out this regimen of vitamins and oils to see if it can help with my neuropathy. What specific brands of products have you been using?

It's a whole different subject than what I originally posted here for but I actually have some cavities that my dentist has identified but I haven't gotten them filled yet. Do you think it's worth trying the heal them with this regimen you've described before getting them filled?
