Filling and cap serve two distinct functions. One is not a replacement for the other.
Root canal treatment = drilling into a tooth and removing the damaged/dead root that affixes the tooth to the jawbone, and replacing the removed root with a filling to keep it secure in the mouth.
Cap = also known as a crown = used to cover the visible surface of a tooth that has had damage, or had to be compromised by a root canal treatment.
