It's all a matter of perspective. The first time I moved here, from L.A., the winter was a (welcome) change. I really loved it. Then, we moved to Michigan, where this year we got 160 inches of snow. I'll take 57 any day. Glad to be back!!!

On the subject of 60+ degree days in December to February. Lets take a look at one such day, in Denver. January 21, 2014. The day started off with a bone chilling 15 degree windchill just after midnight. The morning commute time still had a windchill of 26 - 32 degrees. Not a very pleasant way to start your day off.

But by noon the temperature climbed to that beautiful 60 degree mark. Too bad most people were working at that time and couldn't enjoy it. Because two hours later the temperature started to plummet again. By 7PM there was a windchill of 36 degrees and it only got worse from there. The day ended almost as cold as it started with a windchill of 19 degrees. Denverites freeze their asses for 22 hours a day, just so they can enjoy two house of sunshine and warm temperatures.

And that is a warm day in January for Denver. We won't even talk about the sub-zero days.

January 2014 had two days where the temperature went below zero, and only four days where it didn't get above freezing.

I think the best way to summarize Denver's winter weather is not "mild". Maybe the better description is "variable".

We have storms, we have cold, but we also have warms days that are very rare in other cities that have real winters. We also have lots of sun and very low humidity. These combine to make for a much more bearable winter than most of the rest of the cities that have winter get.

Mild? Probably not.
Pleasant? For me it's great.

If you hate all things cold like KaaBoom, this is not the place for you. If you enjoy the activities that go along with having a real winter or like having seasons change, it is pretty tough to beat.

A perfect description of Front Range weather. I think the variability is great! Never a dull moment, for sure.

Well, my response to that is "whatever!" The same thing happened all winter when I lived in Orange County. On a typical workday, the high may have been 72 and sunny. But when I left for work, it was 45 and dark. By the time I left work, the sun was going down and the temperature was falling and already chilly. Your point?

Kind of interesting that you focus on and "" the frigid temps that occurred in the middle of the night, yet brush off the pleasant temps in the middle of the day as not really counting because most people are at work and unable to enjoy the nice weather. Perhaps we should only count weekend weather if that is the criteria.

I agree that "variable" is an apt description. I'll take variable winter weather over consistently cold and gloomy winter weather any day. I'll take it over consistently 60 degree weather as well.

As my daughter once said (after living in the Chicago area for a couple years), Denver has two seasons-almost summer, and almost winter.

There are a few days of "real" summer and winter interspersed.

45 degrees even for someone like me who has a very low tolerance for cold, is not that unpleasant. 25 degrees with a windchill of 15 is a problem. It's the difference between 24 hours a day of nice weather, or 2 hours of nice weather and 22 hours of freezing your ass off.
