Colorado is wickedly confusing about this.

Automobile license plates are issued at the COUNTY level.
So, in the City & County of Denver, they are issued by the Motor Vehicle Division (not Department)

Drivers' licenses are issued by the STATE.
This is the: Colorado Department of Revenue, Motor Vehicle Division, Driver's License Section.
And, even though it has Motor Vehicle in its name, it has nothing to do with car license plates. But, it does have everything to do with setting the fees that you will pay to register your car.

The offices are separate and have no official relationship.

And, everyone in Colorado gets confused about this.

So, to get plates for your car:
in Denver County, you go to the Motor Vehicle Division and
in Jefferson County, you go to Jefferson County Motor Vehicle and
in Elbert County, you go to the Elbert County Motor Vehicle Department (which is also known as the Motor Vehicle Division) and
in San Juan County, you go to the Office of the Clerk & Recorder, Motor Vehicle Licensing (But, don't try this in Denver as the Clerk & Recorder has nothing to do with drivers' licenses.)

And, did I mention that everyone refers to both types of places as "the DMV"?

Still confused? Ride a bike.

Would anyone know how much I would have to pay for the registration if I bought a 1978 Civic?

Probably not much. Less than $100 for sure. Hopefully less than $50.

El Paso County, Colorado

I just registered a used 2013 Taurus SHO, cost me $650. Crazy expensive, would expect to see this in a no state income tax state.

$830.97 for a new car a few days ago, which might seem outrageous to some, but I once paid nearly $1000 for a seven year old car in a state back east, so it's all in your perspective.

It will most likely be a couple hundred less next year.

PA Car registration is under $100, but you must get an annual inspection about $80.

Here a $40k new car close to $900! A bit steep IMO.

Yea I would have to agree on that one. my first car, a new Acura ~ 30k, the registration was about 150 when I was in LA. but LA's property tax probably a lot more than Denver. so one way or the other, the gov is gonna reach into your wallet.
