I'm not sure that was a tip jar. It may have been for people to leave money if the person operating the stand is off using the restroom.

Or maybe it is the restroom.

I thought of that.

Two years ago in mid-September or so, I went up to help some friends butcher chickens near Wooster, Ohio, which is "Amish County." I was surprised to see a table in a front yard with a money jar, fresh produce, several brownies, and a sign with the prices. No one was in sight. Granted, it was way off the beaten path, not normally a place someone non-local would be, but that still surprised me. I left $0.50 for one of the brownies and asked my friends about it. They said that was an Amish family and normally one of the young sons was at the table in the summer but school had started.

We've got a few Amish stands that do that. Usually there's someone there, but when the kids are in school they run on the honor system when the adults have to do something else.

In my hometown there was a guy who sold fishing worms that just kept them in an old refrigerator on the back porch, if you needed them you just put the money in a cup in the door.

Don't forget the Adel Sweet Corn Festival this weekend! West Point is having theirs, too, but it's a little bit of a drive from Des Moines.

I've got to work, unfortunately, but thanks for the reminder! I'll put it on the list for next year.

Better to just quit your job in case you die before next year.

Ha! (;

I got taxed to death in Ohio. I'm in the process of rebuilding my savings account. I'll slow down soon. I just want to get a few more pennies tucked away before winter heating season starts.

Well, it was labeled "TIPS", so I'm going to go out on a limb and stick with my original assertion.
