Has anyone here done the Free Press Marathon? I am thinking of training for a marathon again, and am considering Detroit. Just wondering what people thought of the course and if the race is well organized. Thanks for any opinions!

I've never done it, but I've only heard good things about the actual race from people who have. It's an intense marathon, though. A few of my friends have tried, some couldn't finish, another friend, who is a solid athlete, overexerted his leg. And, if I'm not mistaken, 2 guys died last year from heart-related issues. It's a real challenge, so I'd train pretty hard if you're thinking of doing it. As far as the course goes, people said the landscape is real nice. Also, Detroit is pretty flat, so it's a runners paradise, or a bicyclists' paradise if you're me!

I remember hearing about the runners who died doing it-that was tragic.

I would probably follow a 16 week training schedule, starting in June and having the last long training run mid September. I think they offer a half marathon too. That's also an option for me, since I haven't ran a marathon since 2002, and I don't know how well my body will handle that distance anymore.

I did it last year. It was fun. You start in Detroit, run over the Bridge (beautiful) to CANADA! then run back to America through the tunnel (HOT/Humid/FUN) and then run the rest in Detroit. Some uphill, mostly flat suburban areas. It's a big deal, lots of people, lots of fun.

Thanks, it sounds like a great marathon. I may just do it!
