To be clear, I’m referring to the “East Village” next to Indian Village, not East English Village which is a different neighborhood.

I’m not really familiar with the area, and I’m having difficulty finding a lot of info about it. Someone told me that there might be some cool spots in walking or biking distance? I guess the better question is whether I’m going to want to do any walking or biking — the crime stats look pretty abysmal, but having lived in a few different cities, I know that doesn’t always give the full picture. Still, some part of me is always the sheltered suburbanite from Oakland County, MI, and I have to be honest with myself about that. I also haven’t really kept abreast of Detroit developments in the last few years. I know some of these areas are becoming artsy/hipster enclaves (where I might feel a bit more at home), but I’m not sure if that applies to this area specifically.

So, any feedback or thoughts on the East Village?

Thank you!

There really isn't that much to East Village in my humble opinion. There are some nice older apartment buildings and older homes, but it also has a lot of vacant lots and blight. Being immediately east of Indian Village gives it some visibility and desireability, but it's still very, very much a work in progress.

East Village is probably the least of the area called the "Villages" - a collection of neighborhoods just east of Belle Isle. The most sought-after districts in that area are Indian Village, West Village, the "Gold Coast" apartments along the riverfront, Islandview Village, and the Joseph Berry subdivision. West Village is the most artsy, hipster of this cluster, with several cool establishments. But it is rather small and inventory is tight. The "Villages" area has a great location - next to Belle Isle, the riverfront, and only 3 miles from downtown Detroit - so you are biking distance to some great amenities.

Within walking distance to East Village would be establishments in West Village, as well as a few businesses along East Jefferson.

Not much here - https://thevillagesofdetroit.com/

Eastern Market and Midtown are probably the most artsy/hipster areas of Detroit, as well as Corktown.

Other areas of Detroit I would look in include Woodbridge, New Center, Mexicantown, and Milwaukee-Junction (an older industrial area immediately east of New Center that is really starting to see some nice developments/establishments opening)
