City or surrounding area too?

City - Downtown and midtown are reasonably safe. As good or maybe a smidge better than any typical US City.

Tourism is awesome but you do need to know where to go somewhat and that is based on what you like to see.
Amazing 1930s architecture.

Fabulous restaurants - foodie town
Tons of festivals and conventions - mostly music, but a number of other unique events. (look up Youmacon for example).

Lots of small jazz bars that usually have good local bands.

Five major theares (or six, maybe seven depends on what you count) with both music and theatrical performances.

Three huge stadiums both sports venues and performances.

A really nice riverwalk with lots of different parks and things along the way.

A mid-1800s fort that is interesting to tour.

Some really nice city parks - many with live free music on weekends when it is nice out.

Eastern Market - one of the largest historic outdoor markets.

Water stuff.

Belle Isle - an island that is a large state park. It has a cool maritime museum, zoo, beaches, etc.

The Beach - a restaurant/bar that imports many tons of sand into Campus Martius Park. You can lounch on the beach sand in beach chairs while having a light meal or drings, often listenening to music - right in the middle of downtown.

DIA - one of the largest/best art museums in the USA. DIA is surrounded bot several other museums too. Science, History, Black history/Civil Rights, etc. All of them are really interesting
Greektown (small neighborhood with loads of resturuants, bakeries, sometimes street performers. etc.
