I'm relocating to SE Michigan. (Detroit, Ann Arbor: low income, apartments, rent)

I grew up in Garden City, Dearborn and Ann Arbor. I left the first time in the mid to latter 70's and returned for 18 months in the very early 80's and at that time I lived on the West side on Cabot. I visited the area frequently in the mid 80's and lived again for eight months in 1991 in Detroit and spent four months in 1995 in Detroit. I haven't been back in more than ten years now, other than a short visit.

I lived in the Cass Corridor in the 80's off and on into the early 90's and on the East side near Cadieux and Mack in '95.

I want to buy not rent this time. I've always had a fondness for Detroit. So how has it changed? For better or worse?

Some parts of Detroit have changed for the good, and some for the bad. Downtown Detroit has improved a lot since the dates you mentioned. While some of the neighborhoods have gotten a lot worse. Don't get me wrong though many of the neighborhoods have improved, and have not declined.

I'm interested in how Brush Park, Woodbridge, The Cass Corridor, The Villages and The Boston-Edison neighborhoods have fared.

Brush Park - This area of Detroit has suffered decades of urban decay. But recently has been rebuilding and restoring its former beautiful mansions and apartments. It still needs a lot of work though. If you consider looking at Brush Park realize that you may be living in a long term construction zone. This area still has years of construction ahead of itself if it continues to go through the current re-construction status it is in.

Woodbridge - I truthfully do not know to much about this area.

Cass Corridor - I remember that this area used to be very nice, but I am not to sure today. I believe they are starting new construction for low income families.

Boston-Edison - One of the nicest Detroit neighborhoods, it is very beautiful, with many victorian style mansions and homes. Many of them have beautiful gardens also.

Also, look into INDIAN VILLAGE. It is like Boston - Edison but is a little bit nicer.

Downtown has made amazing advances since the early 1980s. You will hardly realize it is the same city.
