No, that's not what the article said. The article said controlling for differences in leisure activity level and calorie consumption people today have BMIs that are 2 points higher than 1980. Again, no surprise. Our work, which is not a leisure activity, is significantly less strenuous than 1980. Just our daily lives are less strenuous. We eat out more, outsource cleaning more, outsource yardwork and car maintenance more, spend more time in front of screens on our butts. And yes, those are all environmental factors. If you read the article you'd also note that compared with 1980 we spend significantly more time on physical leisure activity. Basically that's the only time we do anything that's not sedentary anymore is if we're doing it for leisure, slight exaggeration but not that much.
