Hi my new "no-name" puppy (a/k/a - maybe - Capt. Jack) has a tooth coming in where the baby tooth hasn't fallen out yet. It doesn't even appear loose. The breeder called my attention to it when I picked him up, but I didn't think it was a big deal. Now I'm thinking that getting it pulled could cost around $500, and that maybe I should ask the breeder to share the cost with me. I may be wrong, but I'm thinking that maybe the breeder should have taken care of it before she sold him. Could be he's too young, so I'm not blaming the breeder. She's one of the top breeders in the country, and I trust her completely. She has a good reputation.
Does this mean he needs to have it pulled, which means anesthesia?? At what age is it safe for them? He just turned 5 mos. and seems small and fragile. (maybe I'm comparing him to my big dogs).
Do I wait a couple weeks to see if the other one loosens? How long is it OK to wait?
We're seeing the vet on Monday just for a "well-puppy check" and his rabies vaccination. They said any time after 4 months is OK for that. He's now 5 months, though I could wait if I wanted to.
No sooner did I write the post asking for advice when the tooth that seemed firm and solid two days ago fell out! I found it on the kitchen floor and checked his mouth and sure enough that's the tooth I was concerned about.
I think someone out there must have sent some very good, very strong vibes our way and dislodged the tooth! Thanks! I lost a couple hours of sleep last night over this, will have to turn in early and catch up on it tonight.
I can see why the breeder waited - she knew it was probably going to come out soon. She's undoubtedly seen this happen hundreds of times over the years.
We're going to the vet just the same. I guess it won't hurt to get the rabies vaccine a month early. I think by law he has to have it at six months anyway.
We see a lot of puppies with retained deciduous teeth. We usually wait to pull them when they are spayed/neutered. So if you have any more that you are concerned about or don't fall out, that's the best way to go.
